An official IRF Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the IRF World Ranking System.)
The first tour event in the Czech Republic and the real novelty on this year's World Tour. But although this is indeed a tournament for true Racketlon pioneers the risk that often comes with pioneering is very small this time since there is solid Racketlon experience behind it; Marcel Weigl, the organiser of the World Championships in Vienna (2004 and 2005) is the main tournament director.

An official IRF Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the IRF World Ranking System.)
This is the traditional Belgian "King of Rackets" tournament, that last year adopted the Racketlon format and joined the World Tour, thereby opening up the door between one of Europe's oldest multi racket communities and the International Racketlon community. This attracted a record 170 players (see report) out of which many (given excellent organisation and outstanding Belgian hospitality) said they would be back next year!

Note that the Karlskrona racketlon rules deviate from the standard; 50 points are played in each discipline.

The second Bulgarian Open and the eastern-most tournament on the tour. Given evidence from last year's event (see reports), this is probably the most interesting tournament on the tour.
Considering the success chances are that the attendance figure from last year (35) will double this year and many more will experience Bulgarian hospitality at the Soviet style Sofia Sports Academy.

Scottish Open Edinburgh 23-25 September 2005

An official IRF Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the IRF World Ranking System.)
The fourth(!) Scottish Open and the oldest of all non-Scandinavian tour events. It has been growing each year to reach 70 participants last year (see report) thereby, at an impressive rate, buiding the most successful of all non-Scandinavian Racketlon communities as clearly indicated by two gold medals for Scotland at the last World Championships (see report).
This year's event has the potential to cause another big leap forward for the Scottish community since the tournament is moved from little Monifieth on the Scottish countryside to the capital Edinburgh, implying a much better local marketing opportunity. In parallell with the Czech Open this is the tour novelty of the year!
If you have never been to Edinburgh this is also an opportunity to discover one of Europe's most interesting cities, culturally, historically and visually.

Gothenburg Open Sweden 4-6 November 2005

An official IRF Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the IRF World Ranking System.)
This is the tournament that, in effect, launched Racketlon internationally, now held for the fifth consecutive year. In 2001 it was the first international Racketlon event. In 2002 it was the first official World Championship. In 2003 it was again recognized as the official Racketlon World Championship and in addition the peak of the first Racketlon World Tour with eight tournaments in six countries (see report).
Last year (see report) showed that, although retired from World Championship status, Gothenburg Open is still an event of exceptional prestige on classic racketlon ground. It is also the last event before the World Championships in Vienna - and therefore the last chance to gain ranking points that could influence the Vienna seeding.

The only Tour event outside Europe and the third Canadian Open (see reports - 2004, 2005 - from last years' events). For a good example, see the Pacific Rim Open below, coming up in the beginning of October.)

After three World Championships in Gothenburg (2001-2003) and two in Vienna (2004-2005) it is now time for Belgium to host the racketlon highlight of the year.
This tournament has its origins in the traditional Belgian "King of Rackets" tournament, that in 2004 adopted the Racketlon format and joined the World Tour, thereby opening up the door between one of Europe's oldest multi racket communities and the International Racketlon community. This attracted a record 170 players (see report), which was followed by another record (over 260 players) event in 2005 (see report).

German Open Weiterstadt 25-27 August 2006

An official IRF Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the IRF World Ranking System.)
The third tour event in Germany. Check out the reports from the previous years (2004, 2005) to find out that this is a big tournament in a country with huge potential for racketlon. In 2005 Germany delivered at least two sensational new players through Elmar Schaub (who beat John O'Donnell in Prague) and Oliver Kudicke (who beat Rickard Persson in Weiterstadt). Will new German racketlon stars continue to emerge this year? Probably. Because this country has tradition. Victoria, British Colombia, is a city of 400 000 people on beautiful Vancouver island off the west coast of Canada.

An official IRF Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the IRF World Ranking System.)
The fifth(!) Racketlon English Open and therefore one of the oldest tournaments on the tour. But racketlon development is faster than ever in England so a lot is new.
Last year's tournament (see report) broke British Racketlon records by about 50% with an entry of around 140 players. And this year, inspired Tournament Director Keith Lesser with team is hoping to move the British frontiers of Racketlon further by switching to a new venue - making for the first tour event in Birmingham! (still reasonably close to the Stansted airport!)
This is a four day(!) event with Thursday earmarked for doubles only. If you think this indicates high ambitions you are quite right! Lesser is also the creator of the British and Irish Racketlon Tour currently running through its first year - and a potential applicant for organising the Racketlon World Championships in the near future.

NÖ Novomatic Austrian Open Vienna 24-26 November 2006

Last year's event (see report) attracted players from all five continents - almost 400 players from 30 nations!
Although this year's tournament no longer has World Championship status (in 2006 it is Belgium's turn, see entry above in the beginning of June) Austrian Open is sure to remain one of the most important events on the tour. This year it is also the last tournament of the tour meaning that this is where the winners of the 2006 Racketlon World Tour will be decided!

(Of all countries outside Europe, Canada is the one that has so-far indicated the biggest potential for Racketlon - as shown by interest emerging from several regions within the country. Which led to the establishment of a domestic Canadian Tour in August last year.)
Cheap flights from Europe are available on www.cheapflights.co.uk ! It does not have to be as expensive as you might think to cross the Atlantic. Prices have been known to get down to almost £200 return! Book early!

The search is now on in the Netherlands for Racketlon talent that will "give the top 4 countries a tough time at the World Champs" (coming up in Rotterdam at the end of the year)! Beside these national championships there will probably be another 3 national tournaments before the Worlds.

An official Super World Tour Event on the FIR Racketlon World Tour. (Prestige Factor 1,5 in the FIR World Ranking System and a minimum of 2000 Euro prize money.)
After three World Championships in Gothenburg (2001-2003) and another two in Vienna (2004-2005) this was the tournament that hosted the 2006 Racketlon World Championships immediately recognized as "The Greatest Ever Racketlon Festival" (see report).
Then the World Championships broke all records.

The Finnish Open returns to the Helsinki Metropolitan area, where it all began in 1986. This is where Racketlon, as the FIR now defines it, first emerged!
The venue, Esport Center (www.esportcenter.fi) with 16 tennis, 23 badminton and 8 squash courts, is one of the biggest indoor racket centres in Europe and (according to tournament director Poku Salo) "probably the best suited for Racketlon in the world". It is located in Tapiola "Garden City" about 10 km from the centre of Helsinki. It has been the venue for a number of World and European Squash Championships and many other national and international events in all the four sports.

Karlskrona Open Sweden 28 June - 1 July 2007

Smalltown Karlskrona has one of Sweden's biggest Racketlon communities with the traditional "Racket Virtuoso" tournament having been organised every year at around midsummer during the period 1991-2005.
This tournament, the first "Karlskrona Open", with energetic tournament director Henrik Håkansson, aims to build on Karlskrona's long tradition but also introduces some novelties (in addition to the name change):
- Standard Racketlon counting to 21 will apply (as opposed to the traditional Virtuoso scoring with 40 points in each discipline (except in one in which 41 were played to avoid a draw)
- Karlskrona's new sport centre with fascilities for everything but squash will be used (as opposed to the traditional Virtuoso arrangements to travel between four different sport centres).

Note that Karlskrona and its archipelago is one of Sweden's most spectacular summer holiday resorts well worth a visit on its own merits.

More information will appear in due course on the tournament homepage; www.karlskronaopenracketlon.se

Portuguese Open Tomar Dates TBA!!!

An FIR Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
The first ever international Racketlon event in Portugal to be held in "Complexo Desportivo Municipal de Tomar" - at the very frontiers of the game of Racketlon.
Participation in this event combines well with visiting "Festa dos Tabuleiros" (see official site), one of the most ancient cultural and religious manifestations in Portugal with origins tracing back to pagan(!) times. It is held every fourth year in Tomar and this year the dates have been set to 30 June - 9 July. The main festivities occur on the weekend after the tournament but even if you do not plan on staying you should be warned to book your accomodation early!

German Open Rüsselsheim 13-15 July 2007

An official FIR Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
The fourth German Open. Check out the reports from the previous years (2004, 2005, 2006) to find out that this is a big tournament in a country with huge potential for Racketlon. In 2005 Silke Altmann became the first German to win a tour event (in Belgium) and in 2006 Elmar Schaub became the first German to acquire the title in the Men's Elite category of a world ranking event (in Rotterdam). And chances are that 2007 will see new German stars emerging. Because this is a big country with a long tradition of multi-racket sport or "Mehrschlägerturniere" as the German phraseology has it.
This year the venue is new and so is tournament management! The tournament is moved from Weiterstadt to Rüsselsheim, a slightly bigger town just about 10 km to the north. So it is still close to Frankfurt and your Ryanair connection.

English Open London 17-19 August 2007

An official FIR Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
The sixth(!) Racketlon English Open and therefore one of the oldest tournaments on the tour.
But the venue is new! This year the English Open moves back to London - after last year's visit to Birmingham (see report) - to a sport center in Redbridge. The English have long had their eyes on this center, which is said to be one of the best for Racketlon in England. And it is near Stansted airport and your Ryanair connection!
Expect many new faces as the English Racketlon community continues to grow at a rapid pace.

Bent Sports Challenger Cup Zevenaar, The Netherlands 31 Aug - 2 Sept 2007

An FIR Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
A new Racketlon event in the Netherlands, who are gearing up for the World Champs in Rotterdam at the end of the year.
Zevenaar is an old town with some 20.000 inhabitants, that got its city rights in 1487. It is located near the border to Germany at about an equal distance (ca 100 km) to cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels and Düsseldorf. If you go by plane then fly to Amsterdam (Schiphol) or Düsseldorf and then take the train (2 hrs) to Zevenaar.
The sport center (Bent Sports) is said to be "perfectly fit" for Racketlon comes with a manager that is very enthusiastic about Racketlon. It can be checked out on-line on www.bentsports.nl.

Scottish Open Edinburgh 21-23 September 2007

An official FIR Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
The sixth(!) Scottish Open and the oldest of all non-Scandinavian tour events. Around it has emerged one of the most successful Racketlon communities in the world as clearly illustrated by names like Sarah McFadyen, Katy Buchanan (at this moment - Jan 2007! - previous world no.1:s) and Calum Reid (world no.2 at present and still young enough to be a man for the future).
In 2005 the event was moved from little Monifieth on the Scottish countryside to the capital Edinburgh, implying a much better marketing opportunity. In addition, participants at last years' tournaments (see reports; 2005, 2006) could verify that the new venue was one of the best on the tour.
If you have never been to Edinburgh this is also an opportunity to discover one of Europe's most interesting cities, culturally, historically and visually.

The Pacific Rim Open Victoria, BC, Canada 5-8 October 2007

An FIR Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
After last year's inaugural event (see report) and the initiation of weekly Sunday night Racketlon drop-in sessions in the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre Racketlon is getting popular on the Canadian west coast! Tournament management estimates that the number of participants will grow by about 50% (which should mean about 100 entries).
Victoria, British Colombia, is a city of 400 000 people on beautiful Vancouver island.
This is a 4 day! (Fri-Mon; Monday is a Thanksgiving holiday in Canada) event with huge potential given the vicinity to two of the bigger cities in North America;
Vancouver (3 million people) is 1.5 hours away by ferry (20 minutes by plane-pop)
Seattle (5 million people) is 2 hours away by ferry (20 minutes by plane-pop)
Both Victoria itself and Vancouver have strong Asian badminton and table tennis communities...
The venue - Cedar Hill Recreation Centre - has 6 table tennis, 3 badminton, 4 squash and 4 indoor tennis courts. Experienced tournament director Dean Gillis is their racket sports coordinator.

Gothenburg Open Gothenburg, Sweden 2-4 Nov 2007

An FIR Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
This is the tournament that, in effect, launched Racketlon internationally, now held for the seventh consecutive year. During its first three years it had World Championship status. Before Gothenburg Racketlon Open this sport did not exist on an international level.
Following an FIR decision to only allow one Tour Event per country, Gothenburg has this year taken a step back to Challenger level so that Stockholm could shine the more. But if you want to visit the place where international Racketlon started back in 2001 - the home of International Racketlon - this is still where you should go!

Wilson Bavarian Open Fürth, Germany 16-18 November 2007

An FIR Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
This tournament, in the city of Fürth in Bavaria in the welcoming southern part of Germany, was first run last year and has now been awarded world ranking status. It means an increase to two Racketlon world ranking events in Germany and another important step towards the realization of the German racketlon potential, which is often described as "huge".
Easy to get to! The venue is just 6 km from Nürnberg Airport, the main destination of the low cost airline "Air Berlin" (see airberlin.com) with direct connections to other airports all over Europe, such as Glasgow, London, Vienna and Budapest.
The organisers claim that the sport center (see www.sportpark-online.de) is "fantastic" for Racketlon with 8 indoor and 9 outdoor Tennis courts, 12 badminton courts and 6 squash courts.

Novomatic World Championships Doubles &
NÖ Austrian Open Singles
Vienna 23-25 November 2007

An official FIR Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the FIR World Ranking System. For doubles: Prestige Factor 2,0.)
The fifth Austrian Racketlon Open. After Racketlon's first three World Championships in Gothenburg this is the tournament that took over. After the inaugural event in 2003 it hosted the World Championships in 2004 and 2005, thereby taking the game to new levels.

Last year proved that this tournament is destined to remain one of the most important on the tour - World Championship status or not - given e.g. its accessible location for the emerging Eastern Racketlon communities of Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. And this year it has also been selected to host the Doubles World Championships - after a decision to hold this event separately from the World Championships for national teams and individuals.

World Championships Rotterdam 27-30 December 2007

The prestigious peak of the FIR Racketlon World Tour. (Prestige Factor 2 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
This is the sixth annual Racketlon World Championships. In one of the youngest and most interesting Racketlon countries at present.
Although Holland had its first Racketlon tournament as recently as in April 2006 (see report), and its first international event as recently as in December 2006 (see report) the Dutch Racketlon community has quickly established itself as one of the strongest and most promising. This has no doubt been possible thanks to Holland's long tradition of multi-racket sport going back all the way to the mid Eighties(!)
