Archive!
This section contains a complete chronological list of all international Racketlon events that took place from that first one in Gothenburg 2001 through the full year of 2008. Included in the list are also a number of national tournaments that were either of a "Racketlon breakthrough" nature or for which there were no other appropriate local web site on which to advertise (e.g. all events on the Swedish Racketlon Tour).

For FIR sanctioned events in 2009 and later, see the present FIR homepage; Racketlon.net or - for results and registration - see www.resultreporter.com .

Swedish Open Malmö 11-13 January 2008

A Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the World Ranking System.)
Swedish Open moves to Malmö! Lennart Eklundh - the long time organiser of Swedish Open in Stockholm - one of the most successful tournaments on the tour - hands over to his good friend Thomas Troedsson in Malmö.
Troedsson is the General Secretary of the Swedish Squash Federation so this should be a good opportunity for promoting Racketlon within the squash community. He is also an experienced events organiser, which - together with the fact that Eklundh will support him - means that you can count on a quality job!
It should also be a good opportunity to connect to Denmark, Europe's most successful badminton nation and remarkably invisible in the Racketlon context. So far! Malmö (after Stockholm and Gothenburg Sweden's third largest city) is, since year 2000, connected to Danish capital Copenhagen by a bridge making it only 30 minutes away by train or car. The region is known as the "Öresund Region" and is Scandinavia's biggest and most densely populated city region with 3,5 million people - many of them Danish badminton players(!)
The sport centre (Bellevuestadion) is one of Sweden's largest racket centers with 10 badminton courts, 8 squash courts and 9 indoor tennis courts (excluding another 7 outdoors). And it can certainly be said that it has been waiting for a big Racketlon tournament for many years now. This might well be the start of a new major Scandinavian Racketlon community!

Hungarian Open Budapest 22-24 February 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
The third Hungarian Open. Last year's move from small town Pécs in the south of Hungary to Beautiful Budapest turned out to be a hit with the international Racketlon crowd as seen by the fact that the event attracted over 150 entries (see report).
This tournament is also an opportunity to get to know one of the quickest growing Racketlon communities at present.
Further information is available through www.racketlon.hu.

Canadian Open Toronto 7-9 March 2008

An official Super World Tour Event on the Racketlon World Tour. (Prestige Factor 1,5 in the World Ranking System and a minimum of 2000 Euro prize money.)
The only Tour Event outside Europe and the fourth Canadian Open (see reports - 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 - from last years' events). This year's event promises to beat previous records as regards size and prize money as Canadian Racketlon gears up. (Of all countries outside Europe, Canada is the one that has so-far indicated the biggest potential for Racketlon - as shown by interest emerging from several regions within the country. Which led to the establishment of a domestic Canadian Tour in August 2006.)
Cheap flights from Europe are available on www.cheapflights.co.uk ! It does not have to be as expensive as you might think to cross the Atlantic. Prices have been known to get down to almost £200 return! Book early!
Further information will become available in due time on the tournament homepage; www.canadianracketlon.ca

Czech Open Prague 4-6 April 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
The fourth Czech Open. Organized at the same venue ( "Club Hotel Praha - Pruhonice") as last years' events (see reports: 2005, 2006, 2007), a sport center that proved very popular with the players - for good reasons; 3 tt, 3 ba, 2sq, 4 te + swimmingpool, sauna and a 4 star hotel at an affordable price.
Take care to notice that the event takes place in Prague - one of Europe's most beautiful cities.
Further information will become available in due time through www.czechracketlon.cz

British Open Ipswich 17-18 May 2008

A Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the World Ranking System.)
A second World Ranking event in England! - reminiscent of old times; Back in 2003 and 2004 at the very beginning of the history of International Racketlon the English had two tournaments on the World Tour; The English Open in the autumn (still going very strong gaining momentum annually since 2002) and the British Open in April (see reports from these classic Stuart Foster events in Watford; 2003 and 2004). The name "British Open" has not been used since then but is now re-awakened by this tournament in Ipswich, the first British Challenger event.
For more info, see the tournament homepage. A visit to the homepage of English Racketlon - www.racketlon.co.uk - should also be rewarding.

17th "Win for Life" King of Rackets Oudenaarde, Belgium 30 May - 1 June 2008

An official Super World Tour Event on the Racketlon World Tour. (Prestige Factor 1,5 in the World Ranking System and a minimum of 2000 Euro prize money.)
After three World Championships in Gothenburg (2001-2003) and another two in Vienna (2004-2005) this was the tournament that hosted the 2006 Racketlon World Championships immediately recognized as "The Greatest Ever Racketlon Festival" (see report).
This tournament has its origins in the traditional Belgian "King of Rackets" tournament, that in 2004 adopted the Racketlon format and joined the World Tour, thereby opening up the door between one of Europe's oldest multi racket communities and the international Racketlon community. This attracted a record 170 players (see report), which was followed by another record (over 260 players) event in 2005 (see report). Then the World Championships broke all records. In 2007 (see report), the tournament was awarded Super World Tour status and the high ambition level was maintained.
Details on how to enter etc. will appear through the homepage of the Belgian Racketlon Federation, www.racketlon.be in due course.

Finnish Open Helsinki 13-15 June 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
Last year the Finnish Open returned to the Helsinki Metropolitan area, where it all began in 1986. This is where Racketlon, as the International Racketlon Federation now defines it, first emerged!
The venue, Esport Center (www.esportcenter.fi) with 16 tennis, 23 badminton and 8 squash courts, is one of the biggest indoor racket centres in Europe and (according to tournament director Poku Salo) "probably the best suited for Racketlon in the world". It is located in Tapiola "Garden City" about 10 km from the centre of Helsinki. It has been the venue for a number of World and European Squash Championships and many other national and international events in all the four sports.
More information will appear in due time on www.racketlon.fi/FinnishOpen

Report: Revenge!

Karlskrona Open Sweden 26-29 June 2008

Smalltown Karlskrona has one of Sweden's biggest Racketlon communities with the traditional "Racket Virtuoso" tournament having been organised every year at around midsummer during the period 1991-2005.
This tournament, "Karlskrona Open", with energetic tournament director Henrik Håkansson, was held for the first time last year and aims to build on Karlskrona's long tradition but also introduced some novelties (in addition to the name change):
- Standard Racketlon counting to 21 will apply (as opposed to the traditional Virtuoso scoring with 40 points in each discipline (except in one in which 41 were played to avoid a draw)
- Karlskrona's new sport centre with fascilities for everything but squash will be used (as opposed to the traditional Virtuoso arrangements to travel between four different sport centres).

Note that Karlskrona and its archipelago is one of Sweden's most spectacular summer holiday resorts well worth a visit on its own merits.

More information will appear in due course on the tournament homepage; www.karlskronaopenracketlon.se

Dutch Open Eindhoven 18-20 July 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
The third Dutch Open - the seond of which was recognised as the Racketlon World Championships 2007!
Although Holland had its first Racketlon tournament as recently as in April 2006 (see report), and its first international event as recently as in December 2006 (see report) the Dutch Racketlon community has quickly established itself as one of the strongest and most promising. This has no doubt been possible thanks to Holland's long tradition of multi-racket sport going back all the way to the mid Eighties(!)
More details will appear through www.racket4s.com in due course
NOTE: This tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Rotterdam but has now been moved to Eindhoven! See newsitem!

English Open (including the Doubles World Champs) Redbridge, London 15-17 August 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
The seventh(!) Racketlon English Open and therefore one of the oldest tournaments on the tour.
But the venue is relatively new! Last year the English Open moved back to London - after last year's visit to Birmingham (see report) - to this sport center in Redbridge. The English had long had their eyes on this center, which turned out to be one of the best for Racketlon on the tour. And it is near Stansted airport and your Ryanair connection!
This year this tournament will include the 2008 Doubles World Championships. As a warm-up for next year's regular World Championships? (England have flagged that a bid is on its way.)
More information is available through the tournament homepage. Also, the homepages of English Racketlon (www.englisracketlon.org) and British Racketlon (www.racketlon.co.uk) are expected to provide relevant updates on the preparations for this tournament.

Alelyckan Open Gothenburg 24 August 2008

The first ever Alelyckan Open. And the only new tournament this year on the Swedish Racketlon Tour.
Tournament Directors Niclas Larsson and Daniel Majetic, two of the frontal figures of Gothenburg Racketlon, invite the Racketlon community to summer Gothenburg and to Alelyckan, the sportcentre that hosted Racketlon's three first World Championships.
For more information, see Tournament Homepage

Note that Friday and Saturday have been skipped as tournament days. This is now scheduled to be a single day tournament. Sunday only.

Novomatic Austrian Open Vienna 29-31 August 2008

An official Super World Tour Event on the Racketlon World Tour. (Prestige Factor 1,5 in the World Ranking System and a minimum of 2000 Euro prize money.)
The sixth Austrian Racketlon Open. After Racketlon's first three World Championships in Gothenburg this is the tournament that took over. After the inaugural event in 2003 it hosted the World Championships in 2004 and 2005, thereby taking the game to new levels.

Following years have proved that this tournament is destined to remain one of the most important on the tour - World Championship status or not - given e.g. its accessible location for the emerging Eastern Racketlon communities of Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Further details will appear through www.racketlon.at in due time.

Swiss Open Zürich 13-14 September 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
The only new country on the Tour! After last year's inaugural event - the first in Switzerland and a major breakthrough for Racketlon (see report + newsitem with video from Swiss television) - Swiss Open has been awarded Tour status. As last year's event clearly showed this is a country with big Racketlon potential. And the venue (the VITIS sport centre) is their biggest racket centre. Roger Federer, Martina Hingis; Here comes Racketlon!
This is an accessible tournament. The sport centre is situated next to a railway station only 15 minutes from central Zürich and similarly close to the Zürich airport.

Scottish Open Edinburgh 26-28 September 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
The seventh(!) Scottish Open and the oldest of all non-Scandinavian tour events. Around it has emerged one of the most successful Racketlon communities in the world as clearly illustrated by names like Sarah McFadyen, Katy Buchanan (at this moment - Nov 2008! - previous world no.1:s) and Calum Reid (world no.2 at present and still young enough to be a man for the future).
In 2005 the event was moved from little Monifieth on the Scottish countryside to the capital Edinburgh, implying a much better marketing opportunity. In addition, participants at last years' tournaments (see reports; 2005, 2006, 2007) could verify that the new venue was one of the best on the tour.
If you have never been to Edinburgh this is also an opportunity to discover one of Europe's most interesting cities, culturally, historically and visually.
For all other info, see Tournament Homepage.
Good Manners! - a report from the event

The Pacific Rim Open Victoria, BC, Canada 10-12 October 2008

An FIR Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the FIR World Ranking System.)
The third annual Pacific Rim Open. See report from the inaugural event in 2006. Racketlon is gaining a firm foothold on the Canadian west coast!
Victoria, the capital of British Colombia (the westernmost of Canada's provinces), is a city of 400 000 people located on beautiful Vancouver island.
This is an event with huge potential given the vicinity to two of the bigger cities in North America;
Vancouver (3 million people) is 1.5 hours away by ferry (20 minutes by plane-pop)
Seattle (5 million people) is 2 hours away by ferry (20 minutes by plane-pop)
Both Victoria itself and Vancouver have strong Asian badminton and table tennis communities...
The venue - Cedar Hill Recreation Centre - has 6 table tennis, 3 badminton, 4 squash and 4 indoor tennis courts. Experienced tournament director Dean Gillis is their racket sports coordinator.
For more information, see the tournament homepage at www.pacificrimopen.com
Brix beat the European - a report from the event

Gothenburg Open Gothenburg, Sweden 31 Oct - 2 Nov 2008

An official Racketlon World Tour event. (Prestige Factor 1 in the World Ranking System.)
This is the tournament that, in effect, launched Racketlon internationally, now held for the eighth consecutive year. During its first three years it had World Championship status. Before Gothenburg Racketlon Open this sport did not exist on an international level. So, if you want to visit the place where international Racketlon started back in 2001 - the home of International Racketlon, this is where you should go!
Following an FIR decision applicable as of 2007 each country can only have one single tour event. This year it is Gothenburg's turn after Stockholm last year.

A Challenger Event. (Prestige Factor 0,5 in the World Ranking System.)
A new tournament in Holland! In the small town of Dronten in the very center of the country. For Europeans a striking feature with Dronten should be its youth. It was planned and built in the 1950:s and 60:s and wasn't given its official name until 1972(!)
The name of the sport center is Flevoparq. See www.flevoparq.nl for their homepage. (4 squash courts + 4 indoor tennis courts)
World ranking points gained at this tournament will be included in the rankings used for the seedings at the World Championships.
More info will appear in due time (scheduled for the beginning of September) on www.racket4s.com.

The Wilson Racketlon World Championships Fürth, Germany 27-30 Nov 2008

The prestigious peak of the Racketlon World Tour. (Prestige Factor 2 in the World Ranking System.)
The eighth annual Racketlon World Championships this is destined to become a major breakthrough for Racketlon in Germany - a country that has gained considerable Racketlon momentum over recent years - but there should still be huge unrealized potential.
This tournament, in the city of Fürth in Bavaria in the welcoming southern part of Germany, was first run in 2006 and was awarded world ranking status in 2007.
Easy to get to! The venue is just 6 km from Nürnberg Airport, the main destination of the low cost airline "Air Berlin" (see airberlin.com) with direct connections to other airports all over Europe, such as Glasgow, London, Vienna and Budapest.
The sport center (see www.sportpark-online.de) is described as "fantastic" for Racketlon with 8 indoor and 9 outdoor Tennis courts, 12 badminton courts and 6 squash courts.
See Tournament Homepage for all other information.
